Germany lost the game 3-4 against Italy which was scored by Italian midfielder Rivera in the 111th minute. Beckenbauer had sustained the injury to his shoulder at the end of regulation but after a support wrap was applied, he had played on through the two extra time periods of 15 minutes each.
