25 March 2005: The Barrel Scrapers from Croydon, Surrey, won this year's 74th World Marble Championships at The Greyhound Pub in Tinsley Green, West Sussex, ending the 3 year winning run of German teams. The formal championship started at the old Greyhound pub in Tinsley Green and transferred to the existing pub in 1936 where it has been held ever since. Forty-nine marbles are placed in a ring and the first team to knock out 25 marbles from the ring using their tolley is the winner. Its origins date back more than 500 years. Legend has it that two men fighting for the affections of a single woman created the game to decide who should win her hand in marriage.
